Visiting the Barra del Colorado National Refuge
Officially it is called Refugio Nacional de Fauna Silvestre Barra del Colorado, but to simplify we will call it Barra del Colorado. This is one of the must-see destinations of Costa Rica, at least for those who love nature (and in this Central American country, it is well known there's plenty of it!). Barra del Colorado is part of SINAC, the National System of Conservation areas created in 1994 to protect the Costa Rican environment. As the neighboring Tortuguero National Park, The Barra del Colorado National Park is located in the northeastern corner of the country, in a remote and isolated area compared to the other parks visited by tourists. Accessing this pristine location is an adventure in itself: you can get there by water passing the Tortuguero, by road with a jeep, or by air with small airplanes that land on runways deep in the forest.....
The distances from the “rest of the world” are significant: if the nearest town is the village of Cariari (about 30 km), the capital San Josè is located 225 km from the borders of the park! Luckily, although difficult, it is not impossible to get to Barra del Colorado. The planning in these cases is crucial, to avoid wasting precious time and missing the best destinations. Among these the Isla Machuca, the Samay Lagoon, and the Caño Bravo, but also the hikes with specialized guides and rangers, to admire the exceptional variety of flora and fauna.
GOING TO COSTA RICA WITH MYDAS TRAVEL
In addition to hammocks where to take a nap, at Barro Colorado you will have plenty of opportunities to indulge in birdwatching or fishing. The waters of the Caribbean Sea are particularly rich and various operators offer fishing trips in groups. Thanks to the collaboration with local staff, Mydas Travel has successfully organized dozens of trips to Costa Rica, that include visits to Barra Colorado and many other national parks, such as the neighboring Tortuguero National Park, the Monteverde Natural Reserve, the Arenal Volcano National Park, and the Cahuita National Park. These are the best destinations to forget the daily stress and immerse yourself in the beauty of nature.
