The "Jefe Cafetero" is located in the center of western Colombia and is part of the Andean Region, located above the Western and Central Cordilleras. In 2016 Pereira was declared the capital of the Eje Cafetero. The climatic and geological conditions of this region favor the production of high quality coffee with quite short harvesting periods. The peasants in the area have developed excellent cultivation, harvesting and processing techniques "grain for grain" and have maintained this form of transformation despite new intensive industrial techniques. The famous "Juan Valdez" advertising icon, created by the National Federation of Cafeteros de Colombia, featured as a typical Colombian farmer of coffee plantations, with his sombrero and the poncho, always accompanied by his mule, has become a triumph of advertising communication. In 2005 in the United States Juan Valdez was considered the most popular advertising image among the inhabitants of this country.
